How to get that nasty dent out of your kayak!

Many people have experienced getting dents in their kayak, but some of you won't know how to get them out; we are going to walk you through the steps of getting out dents.

You will need:

  • Kettle
  • Broom stick
  • Heat gun - You may not need this, but it does help.
  • A dented kayak
  • Spare time and a nice brew

First of all, you can try to leave it out in the sun. This may pop it out if you are lucky.

Ben got a dent in the front of his boat as soon as he got it, and this is how he got it out...

Before

Step 1

Firstly, boil the kettle and make yourself a cup of tea. Take out the outfitting around the area of the dent so it is easily accessible. While you're doing this have the kettle on boil again; make sure you fill this with as much water as it will take.

Step 2
Once the outfitting is out and the water is boiled, hang or lean the kayak somewhere so the dent is at the bottom. Pour the boiled water into your kayak and repeat this twice. Whilst the boiled water is in the boat you can get the heat gun (if using one) and carefully heat the outside of the kayak in the area of the dent. Make sure you do not melt the kayak.

Step 3

When the boiled water in the kayak goes cold, replace the cold water with boiled water as you did the first time and carry on heating the outside up. When you think the kayak has gone soft, stop heating. Keep the boiled water in and get your broom/brush pole and push the dent from the inside- remember the plastic is soft so don't stick the pole through the kayak.

If this doesn't work, repeat the process.

After

Remember, be careful as it will be hot and the plastic will be soft!

Thanks for reading and see you on the water!
